Scheduled Meetings: As announced; most meetings are on Monday

Goals: To learn as much as possible about the care, grooming and handling of dogs.  And, of course, to have fun!
What to expect: You should have a pet dog for this project, although it is not a requirement.   Dogs are "mans best friend" and can be a great companion - but they need to be taught their manners.  And they are depending upon you to take care of them - grooming, feeding, training, and cleaning up after them.  You will also learn how to show your dog on the leash and off.  And there will be opportunity to compete against others.
Time Required: Meetings are one day each month, daily care and feeding of your dog, cleaning of his living area, occasional  washing and, for some breeds, clipping.  Your pet will like to be walked and played with.  And you can show your pet off at Youth Expo and the Orange County Fair
Effort Required: In addition to caring for your pet, you will be expected to participate in Youth Expo and the Orange County Fair:
YOUTH EXPO (a "learning fair" of 2-3 days)
Your dog will live at home during Youth Expo, so no stall Clean-up!
If you wish, you may make a poster or display
        Show your animal
Showmanship (you and your dog are judged)
Conformation  (just your dog is judged)
    ORANGE COUNTY FAIR
You may make a new poster or display, or use the one from Youth Expo
        Show your animal
Showmanship (you and your dog are judged)
Conformation (just your dog is judged)
Your dog will go back home after the competition
Estimated Costs: Since your dog is a pet, this is a very long term commitment.  You can purchase a dog for almost any amount of money.  The newspaper and the shelter are good sources for inexpensive pets.  Or you can go to a breeder for that special pedigreed animal.  Feeding costs vary, but you should expect at least $10 a month for a small breed and $20 or more for a larger breed.  Collars, leashes, "pooper scoopers", dog toys, are all additional expenses that vary greately depending upon personal preference.  In most areas dog licenses are required.  In Orange, CA a dog licenses are around $24 for a neutered or spade dog and a lot more for an unaltered dog.
