OABB MEMBER - BASIC RESPONSIBILITIES

ORANGE, CALIFORNIA

Before you can participate in any 4-H activities, you must be a 4-H member.  Youth membership is open to all who are 5 years of age up to a senior in high school.  The 4-H year parallels the school year, beginning at the end of summer.  To participate in the 4-H year, you must join before November 31st of that year.  If you are interested in joining OABB 4-H, located in East Orange, California, please email us and we will get your information to the correct people.

Within OABB there are many opportunities to participate.  Many, varied, animal an non-animal project groups are offered.  Like all other 4-H clubs, OABB relies on volunteers and member participation to flourish.  Committees plan and execute club level activities and fund raisers.  To help not only ourselves but also our community, we perform community service projects.  Although the youth members "run the show", they do this with the help of adult leaders.  And general club meetings provide a forum for exchanging information with all club members.  This page describes the basic responsibilities of all members of the 4-H family.

REGULAR YOUTH MEMBER (Ages 9-19)

BEGINNING OF YEAR

  • Select a minimum of two projects.  Ideally, at least one would be a project involving an animal.  You can check the project pages and the OC Fair pages on the OABB web site to see what each project is like
  • Download a copy of the Personal Development Report (4H 1071).  Use page 2 to set your goals for this year and plan the activities you need to reach those goals.
  • For your animal project(s) download a copy of any project report forms for your animal.  These will  help you know what data to record during the year
  • If you are signing up for a Leadership Project (Junior Leaders are in grades 7-9 and Senior Leaders are in grades 10-12), you should download and fill in the Leadership Project Report (4H 8034) at the beginning of the year.  Review your plans with your Adult Leader.  During the year you will need to check off each objective as it is reached
  • Sign up for committees that interest you (or you may be "volunteered for some that don't")

DURING THE YEAR

  • Attend meetings of the projects you selected. You need 80% attendance to get credit for the year
  • At each meeting, fill in a brief description of what you did at that meeting in the Annual Project Report (4H 1070). The adult leader of each project will keep these forms.
  • Keep your own record of what you are doing in the project.  If you are in an animal project, you will need to keep detailed records of what you do with your animal including all expenses.
  • Complete the projects as directed by the leaders.  Each project will be different, but above all you will be learning by doing while having fun
  • Attend the general OABB meetings, you need 80% attendance to get credit for the year.  At least one parent must attend these meetings with you.
  • Participate in fund raising events and community service projects
  • You should participate in Demo Day, Youth Expo, and the Orange County Fair

 END OF YEAR

  • To get credit for the year,  you must complete and turn in at least the PDR, or Personal Development Report (4H 1071).  You should turn in a complete record book, which includes not only the PDR but also details of each project in which you are participating.

SUPPORT THE OABB WEB SITE

The OABB web site is meant to be a living window into OABB.  It exists so that our members can "see" what other projects are doing, and so that non-4H members can see what 4H is all about.  And it provides a single, easily accessible point for distribution of information such as meeting dates and times, documents, and forms together with information on filling out those forms.  Your web site needs:

  • PICTURES! - We would like tell the story of your project's 4H year.  For example, for an animal project, pictures of meetings, purchasing the animal, all aspects of care, training for showmanship, demo day,  showing at fairs and any other aspects of your project.  Public service project pictures are also needed.  E-Mail digital pictures or loan us your photographs to be scanned
  • MEETING DATES! - A calendar posted on the web provides an easy method to inform your members.
  • INFORMATION! - Each project's web pages include information on that project.  The computer project will write it up - just give us the information
  • LINKS! - If you have links to informative web sites on your project, or commercial sites for supplies, let us know and we'll post them on the web for others to use

POSSIBLE PROJECTS

The following table shows many of the more common 4H projects.  Not all possible projects are listed.  And not all projects listed have adult leaders.  If you find something that you would like to do, check to see if that project already exists at OABB.  If not, perhaps you can find an adult that would like to lead that project (for example your parent or sibling over 18).  If that fails, you can do almost any approved project under the category of "Self Determined".
