COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECTS

ORANGE ACRES BACK BREAKERS

GENERAL Community Service Projects

YEAR: 2007-2008

Leader:  Each member selects their own projects

Meetings: None (your projects are your meetings)

Goals: All OABB 4H members are automatically in this project.  We will learn and feel the importance of giving back to the community, as we live part of the 4H pledge "...and our hands for greater service".  And, of course, to have fun!
What to expect: Across the year there will be many different projects to choose from.  In the past we have gone on canned food drives (fun scavenger hunts) - or asked members to create boxes with toiletries and other necessities to donate to shelters (Mission Shoe Boxes for Mary's  Kitchen), we have gone on walks to help raise money for causes such as breast cancer (CHOC walk).  We have helped clean up the community along Handy Creek and at the Sully Miller Arena.  And we have helped needy families during the holidays (Holiday Spirit Adopt-A-Family).  We have attended events for the community to help kids have fun (candy popper craft booth at the Friendly Center Christmas Party).  We  have made crafts boxes to give to patients at CHOC.  And we have taken our animals around to schools, including schools for special needs children - and to homes for the elderly.  If you have an idea that will help others, propose it and if it sounds reasonable you or the group can take it on as a project
Time Required: The time required varies.  You can become as involved as you would like, even running your own project solo or with a group.
Effort Required: There are many opportunities across the year to participate - either as a member of a project or choose to lead your own solo or offer it to a group.  Some projects you accumulate items and give to individuals (e.g canned food drive), some projects you will need to attend (helping at a community center)
YOUTH EXPO (a "learning fair" of 2-3 days)
You can run a booth at the Youth Expo where attendees make items to give to the needy
You can participate in a poster competition for Community Pride
ORANGE COUNTY FAIR (1 week of the 3 week fair)
You can participate in a poster competition for Community Pride
Estimated Costs: If you are "into it", this project costs more in time than money.  Your efforts will encourage others to give their time, money, or items to help others.
