What is
Paws for Independence?
Paws for Independence is a
4-H Club in South Orange County, California whose youth members, support the
mission of Guide Dogs for the Blind, Inc. by becoming volunteer puppy
raisers.
We are part of the 1000 volunteer puppy raisers
throughout the Western U.S. raising puppies for
Guide Dogs For the
Blind. Puppy raisers with the help of local expert guidance and
instructional materials take 8 week old puppies, future guide dogs, into
their home for 12 to 18 months to housetrain the pups, teach them basic
obedience and good manners and socialize them to all types of
experiences they might encounter as a working Guide Dog.
This project
teaches the youth members of our Club responsibility, leadership skills
and compassion for both animals and the disabled.
Purpose of
Paws for Independence:
To develop
effective leadership among youth and adults.
To aid in the development
of Club members through project work, meetings, community service, club
and county events and activities.
To nurture,
train, socialize and love Guide Dog puppies, giving them the opportunity to enter Guide Dog
Training.
To positively represent 4-H and Guide Dogs for the Blind in
our communities.
