2008 4-H Golden Clover Awards
The Golden Clover Awards recognize outstanding achievement of 4-H
members, volunteers, and groups within the 4-H YDP.
And the Award for "Mentoring" goes to Amanda Lewis, Orange County
4-H is an amazing organization that has led her to friends, leadership,
knowledge and new skills. During her time in 4-H, she has been a positive role
model to many younger 4-H members, especially during 4-H summer camp. Her
talents enable her to create new activities for kids to leave them with a big
smile. As one 4-H volunteer leader states, “Amanda is a patient teacher with a
sense of humor and an ability to engage the campers.”
Congratulations Amanda
Summer Camp is Full!
August
11th through 16th
Camp is filled to capacity.
A total of 122 youth have registered this
year and more boys than we have seen in years (44). Hopefully this is a trend
that will continue for years to come. Our counselor staff has been working
hard all year planning a week of fun and adventure. All will be spending a
week at The Barton Flats Recreation Area making new friends while getting to
know the bears, the squirrels and raccoons.
If you are one of the lucky boys or girls that will be going to camp this
year please be at the UCCE / 4-H office by 8:00 am Monday morning August 11th.
We sure could use a few dads to help us pack the luggage on to the busses.
The bus will leave for the trip up the hill by 9:00 am. If for some reason
you can not keep this schedule please call and let us know of your plans.

Good bye & Good Luck Margie
Margie Alvarez retiring on July 27th
Margie has been 26 years with Cooperative Extension. She heads up the
Expanded Food and Nutrition
Education Program here at our County Cooperative Extension office. I
guess you could say she specializes in stretching your food dollars while still
eating a healthful diet. Always willing to help out 4-H. All we had to do
was ask. She was one of our judges at the June 22 Chili Cook-Off.
We wish her all the best.

Chili Cook-off #1
Our first Orange County 4-H Chili Cook-Off took place Sunday, June 22 at the
Orange County Fairgrounds Courtyard. Along with the biggest bounce house
you have ever seen 4-H members were treated to a Dunk Tank, Face Painting, Jelly
Sandwich Building, a Silent Auction that raised a bunch of money for our summer
camp program, Lucas Ryder and his magic plus tons of chili. We had a total
of 16 chili's competing this year.
Margie Alvarez and Connie Ortiz of our Cooperative Extension's
EFNEP Program along with Christine Featherstone from YLC were our judges
this year and they were tough. Top chili honors go to Bonanza Canyon
Bobcats. Honorable mention goes to Christian Redman
Our first People Choice Award went to Yorba Linda Cloverleaf's Intermediate
Foods Project.
Club Sprit Award went to The Orange Acres Backbreakers.
A big thank you to all our chili contestants and congratulations to our
winners.
Congratulations
to our OC4H Ambassador Team for another successful event. This is just one
of the events you can work on and plan as one of our 4-H Ambassador's.

2008 Fashion Revue
Sea Jay Bates, Trabuco Trailblazers 4-H
2008
Fashion Revue was a big hit this year. Our county theme was "Strike a Pose". A
big thanks goes out to Kathy and Heather McCloskey and to all the volunteers who
helped make it happen. Two county workshops were held this year. The first was
given by Heather. She showed us several creative techniques on how to embellish
clothing. At the second workshop three special guests from a modeling agency
showed us how to walk, turn, and look good on the runway. Our first competition
was county Fashion Revue. We modeled our outfits as our commentaries were being
read. We also met with judges for an up close interview. The next weekend we got
to do the fashion show over again for the public at Youth Expo. We finished it
up with an awards ceremony, many of us qualified to go to South Sectional 4-H
Field Day and State 4-H Field Day. Sectionals was held at Mount San Antonio
Collage. It was a lot fun because we were competing against other counties. The
final Fashion Revue competition was held up at State 4-H Field Day at U.C.
Davis. I was able to attend, and I met so many nice 4-H kids from different
areas. I also attended some community service workshops. It was an over all
great experience. The highlight of my trip to Sacramento was brining back the
title of State winner for the intermediate recycled division. My outfit was a
three piece set made out of Capri Sun Juice Bags. I am already thinking of ideas
for next year. Hope to see more 4-Hers enrolled in the Fashion Revue project for
2009 it is lots of fun. I highly recommend it.
Cooperative Extension Office Is Moving
The Fair has announced that the site on which our trailers are sitting will
soon become the Orange County Fair's new administration building. The
current administration building was built back in 1941 as part of the Santa Ana
Army Base and they don't build 'em like that anymore.
Shortly after the Fair ends, all off our Cooperative Extension
staff will be moving into the Ranch building at the other end of
the fairgrounds. OC Fair staff that currently occupy this building will be
squeezing into the old administration building. Once everybody gets
relocated the trailers will be removed and construction will begin.
Record Book Judging Dates Announced
All
books are due at the 4-H office by August 20th to be eligible for judging.
Judging
will take place at the O.C. Fair Silo Building on August 23 for Primary, Junior
and Intermediate books
Senior
book judging will take place on August 30th also at the Silo Building.
Summer Camp
Lea Jew, Summer Camp Staff
At
the
June summer camp counselor meeting we started off with an
icebreaker game to get the socialization going, and after that we worked
in five groups at a rather brilliant puzzle intended to get us thinking about
what kind of things should be at camp and what others should be left out. All
the pieces had different values and ethics to bring to camp, for example, "camp
creates an atmosphere where kids feel included," or "campers should never
experience failure". As we put the puzzle together we had to decide which things
should come to camp and which should be left out. The puzzle pieces were hand
cut and were hard to get together, so we all had to work hard to make them fit.
After the puzzle we reviewed our responsibilities for our committees - campfire,
dance, nature, marketing and Olympics. We discussed the Chili Cook-off on Sunday, June 22nd. It's going to be so much fun, I have a feeling it will
have a huge turnout in attendance. There will be games, prizes, food, and a
silent auction, and admission is free! All the counselors paired up with their
junior counselors as well, and we turned in our cabin names, which mirror this
year's camp theme, 'Music Revolution'. Everything is well under way to making a
great camp. We've got tons of fun activities and events going on for camp. The
deadline for signing up your kids is July 1st, so sign your kids up soon! Summer
camp is going to be a blast!
Club Treasurers
Now is the time for all good treasurers to come to the aid of their club and prepare a budget draft for next year. Typically it's the
job of the incoming treasurer to prepare the club's financial budget. However, if you have ever been the treasurer, you know this is no job
for a rookie. If you were to get your budget together now while this year's finances are fresh on your mind, then you can have your club
president appoint a budget committee to review your proposed budget. Remember to send a copy of your approved budget to Rachel at the 4-H office.
Club Treasurers Training
Saturday, September 13th, 9:00 to 11:30 (OC Fair Silo Building)
Everyone is welcome at this important training.

|
 |
